Use the login at the top of the page. Enter your username and password into the textfield and hit "Login". If your login failed you probably entered a wrong password. Note also that your password is case sensitive. In case you forgot it you can always get a new password.

Just hit "Change Config" after you logged in.

:: Frequently asked questions ::

My turn was not processed by PlanetsServer. Can you rehost the game?

In one word, NO. All in all we can not guarantee the correct delivery of emails to our server. This is not in our hands. Therefore we send confirmation emails. If you didn't get any confirmation, you can savely resend your turn via email, even if you submit your turn via webinterface later. You can send a turn file any time and in any way, and you are encouraged to do so if you didn't get a confirmation email.

1. Starting a game

You can participate in new games by joining one of our preconfigured games or by creating your own game.

1.1 How do I join a game?

To join a game just choose one of our lists under "join game" ,enter your email address behind the race you want to play and click "join". Right after this you are asked if your address is right. To proceed just choose "Yes! Join now!". Please note that the starting process of your game might take a while. So please be patient if you are the last who joins the game.

1.2 How do I create my own game?

Currently you can only create a game with the "new game" option at the main page. To use this option, you need at least four people with email addresses who want play with you. If you start the game, you are the only one who has the possibility to change the days of hosting (we call it "master-player").

1. page: Planetsserver asks you to enter a name for the game, at least 4 email adresses of the participants and the weekday(s) to host on.

2. page: Choose map, shiplist and add-ons (defaults given).

3. page: You have to enter the options for the universe. Currently "classic" and "disunited kingdom" scenarios are available.

4. page: Configuration for the host (defaults given).

5. page: After this you have to confirm your entries and planetsserver will run the first host and mail the RST-Files to the participants. Please be patient! Planetsserver has to send at least 10 mails. This might take a while.

After getting the first RST, every player should login to the server (player config) an change his password! Defaults are send to you with the welcome email.

2. Get RST-Files

Planetsserver sends automatically the RST-files to the players by email. If you need your RST again for any reason, you have two possibilities:

1. Send an email to (or ) with the subject-line:

get rstfile <number of your race> <name of your game>

(e.g. Subject: get rstfile 8 firstgame; if you are playing the Evil Empire, and the name of your game is "firstgame")

2. Login in to "player login" and click "download last RST-File" to start the download.
For Internet Explorer 4 users: Sorry this does not work with IE4. We hope MS will support MIME in near future.

2.1 Internet Explorer extends my filename, what to do?

Internet Explorer doesn't recognise your file as normal data and extends the name in the useless attempt to assign it a certain program. The resulting names look like "player1.rst..rst"
You can

  1. use an other browser.
  2. assign the RST files to a program (like winplan).
    To do so, just
    • Double click on the RST file as if to start it.
    • A window should pop up, asking to assign the data to a program.
    • Click on the button named "others" to select a program which is not listed
    • Select your favorite planets program.
    • Confirm.

3. Get my UTIL.DAT

Login to planetsserver with "player login" and check the option "get util.dat every turn".
To get the current util.dat just choose "get last util.dat". (for Internet Explorer users: Sorry this does not work with IE. We hope MS will support MIME in near future.)

4. Send TRN-Files

You have three possibilities for sending in your TRN-files:

1. Login to planetsserver with "player login". Use the "browse" button to locate the trn-file on your local harddisc an click "send turnfile" to submit it. You'll get an answer about the status of your turn immediately.

2. Reply to the last RST-mail from planets and attach your TRN-file MIME-encoded or uuencoded to the Mail.
In Netscape Mail select your email from planetsserver, and click the "Reply" button. In the compose window select "Attach" - "File..." and set the position of your TRN-file. Select "Attach" and send the message. It's that EASY!
(e.g. "Subject: Re: rstfile firstgame" if the name of your game is "firstgame")
Later you get an answer email from planetsserver, if your TRN-file is ok. If you didn't get an answer, please check if we received your mail (see player login).

3. Mail to with
Subject: <name of your game>
(e.g. "Subject: firstgame" if the name of your game is "firstgame")

5. Change email address / login password

Just login to planetsserver with "player login", click "change settings", overwrite the old values and click "submit".

6. Change hosting period

Only the master player can change this. Just login with "master login", change the values and click "submit".

6.1 Change Host Configs

Only the master player can change this. Use the button "change host config" in "master login".

7. "Master Player"

To give the users of the planetsserver the chance to change hosting periods and the host configs, we created the "master player". This is the only person in the game who can change it. Normally there is nothing to change, but the master can do so, if he is asked to by other participants of his game.

8. What is this UTIL.DAT good for?

UtilX.dat (where X is your race number) is generated by PHost to support external programs like EchoView.

9. What is this xyplan1.dat I get every turn?

If you subscribed to a game with ExploreMap, your view is recalculated every turn. This view is send to you every time a new turn file arrives.
You need to save the file in your planets game directory, which is normally one of the vpwork* subdirectories of your winplan installation. Don't overwrite your xyplan.dat file in your main winplan directory. Save the file in one of your vpwork subdirectories! If you haven't done already rename your file to xyplan.dat.

10. Java View (viewing turns online)

"java view" is the possibility to view your turn online. It works under serveral conditions:

  • The game must have started after march 98 (new PHost version. Please ask us if you want to update your game).
  • Your browser has to support Java 1.1 (Netscape >= 4.06, IE 4,Netscape 2.02 for OS/2 with Java 1.1, Hotjava-Browser).
  • You need full IP network-connection without filter-proxies, so that the applet can connect to planetsserver.

11. What's TKF?

TKF (The Killing Floor) is a host add-on. More information can be found in a separate TKF documentation.

12. How to report bugs/problems
